Everything Renters Need to Know About Filing a Claim
Renters insurance can cover more than stolen property. Loss of use, liability, and damaged belongings all need different proof.

Separate building damage from your belongings
Your landlord's policy usually covers the building, while your renters policy covers eligible personal property, temporary housing, and liability depending on the event.
When water, smoke, theft, or fire affects your apartment, document both the cause and the items damaged.
Create an inventory fast
List the item, purchase date if known, original cost, estimated replacement cost, and proof. Photos, order history, bank statements, and manuals can help when receipts are missing.
Group small items logically: kitchen tools, clothing, books, electronics accessories, and cleaning supplies.
Track temporary living costs
If the home is not livable, save hotel, meal, laundry, parking, and transportation receipts. These may fall under loss-of-use coverage.
Policy limits and exclusions still apply, so read the declarations page and ask for written confirmation when the adjuster gives instructions.
